The Florida Everglades is being transformed by Pythons and Boa Constrictors

A recent study of the Florida Everglades has revealed some startling facts, mammals of all kinds are disappearing from the Everglades ecosystem; up to 85 to 95 % reduction of mammals have vanished and are no longer being seen regularly. The cause has been traced to the increasing numbers of Boa Constrictors and Pythons, either dumped there by their owners after they get too big as pets or as a result of storms that destroyed buildings that housed these reptiles.

Here is a little bit of dramatic proof of just how big and how dangerous these creatures can become when allowed to hunt freely without any natural enemies to control their population.

I had a visit from a Manatee yesterday, actually they come by quite often, grazing on aquatic plants along the dock and the bottom of the Bay. Here are a few facts about these docile and endangered creatures:

Manatee Facts and Information

Manatees (family Trichechidae, genus Trichechus) are large, fully aquatic marine mammals sometimes known as sea cows. The name manati comes from the Taino, a pre-Columbian people of the Caribbean, meaning 'breast'. They contain three of the four living species in the order Sirenia, the other being the dugong, which is native to the Eastern Hemisphere. The Sirenia is thought to have evolved from four-legged land mammals over 60 million years ago, with the closest living relatives being the Proboscidea (elephants) and Hyracoidea (hyraxes).
Manatees are mainly herbivores, spending most of their time grazing in shallow waters and at depths of 1-2 meters (3-7 ft). Much of the knowledge about manatees is based upon research done in Florida and cannot necessarily be attributed to all types of manatees. Generally, manatees have a mean mass of 400-550 kg (900-1200 lb), and mean length of 2.8-3.0 m (9-10 ft), with maximums of 3.6 meters and 1,775 kg seen (the females tend to be larger and heavier). When born, baby manatees have an average mass of 30 kg.
On average, most manatees swim at about 5 km/h to 8 km/h (1.4 m/s to 2.2 m/s; 3 to 5 miles per hour). However, they have been known to swim up to 30 km/h (8 m/s; 20 miles per hour) in short bursts. Manatees inhabit the shallow, marshy coastal areas and rivers of the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico (T. manatus, West Indian Manatee), the Amazon Basin (T. inunguis, Amazonian Manatee), and West Africa (T. senegalensis, West African Manatee). A fourth species, the Dwarf Manatee (T. bernhardi) was recently proposed for a population found in the Brazilian Amazon, although some have questioned its validity, instead believing it is an immature Amazonian Manatee. Florida is usually the northernmost range of the West Indian Manatee as their low metabolic rate makes cold weather endurance difficult. They may on occasion stray up the mid-Atlantic coast in summer. Half a manatee's day is spent sleeping in the water, surfacing for air regularly at intervals no greater than 20 minutes.
Florida Manatees (T. m. latirostris) have been known to live up to 60 years, and they can move freely between different salinity extremes; however, Amazonian Manatees (T. inunguis) never venture out into salt water. They have a large flexible prehensile upper lip that acts in many ways like a shortened trunk, somewhat similar to an elephant's. They use the lip to gather food and eat, as well as using it for social interactions and communications. Their small, widely spaced eyes have eyelids that close in a circular manner. Manatees are also believed to have the ability to see in color.
They emit a wide range of sounds used in communication, especially between cows and their calves, yet also between adults to maintain contact and during sexual and play behaviors. They may use taste and smell, in addition to sight, sound, and touch, to communicate. Manatees are capable of understanding discrimination tasks, and show signs of complex associated learning and advanced long term memory. They demonstrate complex discrimination and task-learning similar to dolphins and pinnipeds in acoustic and visual studies. Manatees typically breed only once every other year, since gestation lasts about 12 months, and it takes a further 12 to 18 months to wean the calf. Only a single calf is born at a time and aside from mothers with their young or males following a receptive female, manatees are generally solitary creatures.

Quick Guide to Manatees

DESCRIPTION: Large, seal-like body that tapers to a powerful flat tail. Two agile forelimbs with three to four toenails on each, which act like arms to help the manatee maneuver in shallow water, grasp and move food toward their mouths, and act like flippers during swimming. Thick and wrinkled skin with a rough texture - a bit jiggly under the neck and arms. Their skin reacts to touch, as their bodies are very muscular - contracting and changing shape slightly when scratched or tickled. Powerful upper lips which articulate to help maneuver food or dig through sediment.
SIZE : Average 9 to 10 feet long, weighing around 1,000 lbs. Can grow as large as 13 feet and weigh more than 3,000 lbs. Calves are born weighing about 40 lbs, gaining about 700 lbs. during their first year.
BEHAVIOR : Gentle and generally slow-moving. Most of the time is spent eating vegetation (100-150 lbs. per day), resting and traveling. On average manatees can travel about 40 to 50 miles a day, sometimes farther. Chessie, the famed manatee rescued from the cold waters of the Chesapeake Bay and returned to Florida, was tagged with a locating device which showed he traveled as far as Rhode Island during hot summer months.
SIGHT : Some people believe Manatees are near sighted, or may have limited depth perception. It is believed that they can differentiate between colors. It is unclear how manatees navigate in pitch black or murky waters - when their eyesight would be of no use. They do have sparse body hair over their bodies, and thick whiskers on their faces. It is not clear if this aids in navigation. One expert is convinced, however, that they know exactly where swimmers are, even in blackout conditions.
HEARING : Manatees can hear very well despite the absence of external ear lobes. They are not believed to have the capabilities of echolocation.
COMMUNICATIONS : Emit sounds that are within human auditory range. They make sounds such as squeaks and squeals when frightened, playing, or communicating; particularly between cow and calf. No air is released from the manatee when these sounds are made, and it is not clear where the sounds are being produced or if they serve any other purpose.
BREATHING : Manatees are mammals and breath air through their noses at the surface - with nostrils which close tightly when submerged. They breath every few minutes when active or swimming, and every 10 to 15 minutes when resting. They are capable of exchanging 98% of their lungs capacity in one breath. Their lungs are very large, and are also used for buoyancy control. The rushing sound of a deep exhale and breath sound much like a snorkeler. This sound, and the associated "footprint" left by the manatees tail and body at the surface are clues which reveal the presence of manatees in the area.
HABITAT AND FOOD : Manatees are found in coastal waterways, estuaries, salt water bays, rivers and canals, particularly where seagrass beds are located. Manatees are completely herbivorous and can eat 10-15% of their bodyweight daily. In captivity they are fed lettuce and other greens, and given elephant vitamins.
REPRODUCTION : Females mature around 5 to 9 years of age, and males not until 6 to 9 years of age. It is believed that one calf is born every 2 to 5 years. Twins are rare in the wild. Gestation period is around 13 months. Newborns weigh approximately 40 pounds at birth and stay with them other for several years.

Yesterday with two friends I went out into the Back Country of Florida Bay to fish. We were a little hesitant at first because rain threatened most of the morning, after some thought and a glance at the latest radar, we decided to go. Lucky for us the rain stayed over the land while we had decent conditions to fish.

I caught my friend Roland sailing by yesterday near sunset, he was getting in a last sail before we are assailed with rather breezy conditions for the next few days. I was scheduled to join him but an unexpected freezer melt down prevented that. Roland, like me chooses to come South for the winter to escape the brutally cold winters of Maine.

Permit Fishing In The Fl. Keys, Florida Bay

This video is of my first catch of a fish called a Permit. Permit are elusive, big, feisty, taste good and will run off with your line before you know it.

My fishing partners are two Canadians, Wayne and a chap named Shoel, who are childhood friends. Wayne is the experienced Permit man, he knows their habits, how to present bait to them and how to land them. I learned much today, Wayne lost his first one, then Shoel missed and voila I had one on. It took me a full half an hour to land this fish, at times I thought I would never bring it to the boat because of the light tackle I was using.

The video was edited to meet the length requirements of YouTube, it was twice as long before editing.
I used a GoPro Hero2, Outdoor Edition to film the catch, the jumping in the video is from the editing process. I hope to use this same camera to video sailing and motorcycling trips.

First Permit

This fish is called a Permit, resembling a Pompano but larger. They fight like a ba@#$%$d, I caught this one on light tackle so the challenge was a little greater. Great fun. I had a GoPro Hero2 camera on a head strap so I was able to record all the action, in HD video. Now, I just have to figure a way to download it to my blog. YouTube says that the file is too big, so we'll see. The file wound up being 2.5 GB. 30 minutes, I don't supose I could keep your interest for thirty minutes anyway.

Just sharing a few pictures from a great day of sailing that four Cat Boaters had on the Bay yesterday, the water and sky had just the right contrast for nice pictures. Roland on Ibis, Rick and Mary on Sea bean, Carl aboard Katzenjammer and me sailing Lee Marie.

A one reef day although the pictures don't indicate the sea or wind conditions because we were in the lee of a Key. I don't have any pictures of the sail because we all arrived from different directions and left the same way.

We are gathering more Cat's each year, they are becoming very popular in this shallow environment. To date there are about 9 Catboats in this area.

Catching Florida Redfish (Red Drum)

Yesterday was a sailing day, today we changed gears and went out to fish for the wily Redfish.
We were successful and had a great time in the process. These fish are excellent eating, however, today was a catch and release day, all the fish were released unharmed.

My fishing partner was a guy named Wayne, from Canada, he is great to go with because we both have a passion for what we do. Wayne is a fresh water guide up in Canada and has his own Flats boat down here, on this day we used mine. A few pictures tell the story better than I could.

We did what they call sight fishing, you spot the fish and cast to them, unlike blind casting where you cast indiscriminately and hope that there is a fish somewhere near your lure.

We used medium Wt. Carrot Styx 7' poles with 10 or 15 # test braided line. Lures consisted of pinch lead weighted hooks and a plastic DOA. Basically a weedless worm rig with a jerk bait. If you click on the last photo you can see our lures.

With the weather being ideal, ten to fifteen mph out of the E several Catboats set out for a sail. Our destination, as usual, is Nest Key, seven miles to the North of our home location, Nest Key offers a sheltered beach and a time to chit chat with fellow Cat boater's. On this trip Green Eyes, Ibis and Lee Marie were in attendance, we all arrived at different times but spent enough time there that we were able to share stories, have lunch and enjoy a Heineken. Pictures are always better than words, in this case it is no different.

Yesterday I took my Flats boat, along with another boat out to the reefs hoping to find some edible fish, Snapper, Spanish Mackerel Etc. Not long after we arrived at a promising location we trolled around until we found the species for which we we were looking. After three hours we headed home with a nice catch for tonight's dinner plus enough to give to some of my fish loving neighbors.

My boat, called Yellow Tail, strangely enough yellow, had two on board, a new acquaintance from Canada and me. The other boat named Shoo Fly had three aboard, Skip the owner, his daughter and Wayne, another Canadian. We had a great day chasing fish and the weather and sea conditions were perfect for our type of craft.

Roland's First Sail Of The New Year...Fran and I sailed a couple of times already.

Roland and I met on the Bay around twelve noon as planned, we sailed apart for an hour or so then we gradually melded together for a photo Op. We sailed from our home Port and gradually met, from two directions, in Swash Keys. From there we sailed through Baker Cut and back home. Starting out, our craft required a reef but on the way home the reef was shaken out and we enjoyed a leisurely beam reach on the homeward leg of our sail.

Great day on the Bay, temps were in the 60's and the wind out of the NNE about 15 Kts to start diminishing to around 7 Kts for the sail home.

Drove to Ft.Lauderdale Airport today to pick up Frannie, my girlfriend. She'll spend New Year's and a few day's after, relaxing, sailing and hopefully fishing and a good Harley ride to KW or the West Coast.

Today, however, the wind has kicked up out of the South making any water sports nada.

After a stop by the Key Largo Fishery to pick up five pounds of 15-17 Pink Shrimp and some really fresh Sushi grade tuna, we had lunch at Dillon's, the local Irish Pub here in town. A crunchy Grouper sandwich for Fran and a Greek salad for me. Sashimi for us tonight along with a shrimp salad and some smoked fish dip appetizer.

Barry, My New Friend...Well Sort Of

Yesterday I went reef fishing with a couple of friends, Wayne, from Canada and Paul from Michigan. Right off the bat we learned that there is no place for personal political views on fishing trips, so we quickly went about our work to catch fish.

The reefs proved to be very productive on this day, we caught a variety of fish that soon filled our cooler. Then as we were moving to another patch reef we spotted birds working, that means feeding on bait fish, we rushed to the area and proceeded to catch large Spanish Mackerel with lures thrown toward them. We were rewarded for our efforts as we hauled in five or six beauties. These Spanish Mackerel are a delicate fish,white, tender fillets when they are cooked and have a very mild flavor. There are some very good recipes to prepare them and the end result is usually very tasty.

The Mackerel fishing fell off just as quickly as it started, it seems an unwanted guest arrived and was after the same fish that we were. Barry as we called him rolled up on our fishing grounds, uninvited and unannounced. I said to myself, "I have to meet this fellow that has ruined our fishing success", so I quickly rigged up a live Ballyhoo on a small rod and tossed it into the water, bingo, if only my line doesn't break we would soon have our introduction to Barry. As luck would have it, after fighting with Barry for about ten minutes, we had our introduction, face to face. I have included a few pictures so you can see why all the other fish beat it out of the area. Barry the Barracuda, ended up weighing about forty pounds of serious fish eating machine. We were very careful to keep away from the business end of this guy, as he could do some real damage if he ever latched on to an appendage. After pictures and a hearty goodbye, we released him unharmed to spoil fishing or provide sport for some other unsuspecting fisherman. Here, my friends is Barry!

Catboat Rendezvous On Florida Bay...Feb. 17,18,19.

The Upper Keys Sailing Club is sponsoring a Catboat Rendezvous on the weekend of February 17, 18th and 19th. The club wants to make this an annual invitational event for any and all Catboaters and plans are in place for you and any other Catboaters you know to join us. We are to be advertised in the Catboat Association Bulletins along with all the other Rendezvous and whatever buzz we can create for this event will add to the promotion for future years. More information will follow. Please spread the word to your friends.

Although we have had a couple rendezvous previously, this will be the the first one advertised in the Catboat Bulletin and hosted by a sailing club. We have almost ten Catboats on the Fl. Bay now, it looks as if the fever is spreading.

We had a great day in Key West, however, there is nothing like the trip down on a motorcycle, the day was perfect, sunny and a light wind. Tomorrow, a ride with some guy's over to Everglade City for some Stone crab claws, the trip will take us West on Highway 41 through the Everglades.

Tom, a motorcycle buddy from N.J., paid me a visit for the last couple days. Tom, being a avid Harley man, rented a Street Glide for three days, so off we were to tour Key West. Key West from where I live is only about 95 Mi.,were there in two hours ready to take in the sights.

While in Key West, we went to a restaurant called Alonzo's, specializing in seafood, especially Oysters.

Back In The Saddle Again!

Thanks to my friend Bob down here in the Keys, I am once again traveling the roadways on two wheels. He loaned me his Harley Ultra Classic for a week or two, nice to have friends that have 4 or 5 motorcycles parked in their garage.

The first picture is of the Bike and the second, detail of the hand painted fairing, a theme that is present in several locations on the bike. Nice, a little too fancy for my taste.( beggars can't be choosy)

No, we did not have to come back the same way, we entered Long Sound, sailed into Little Blackwater Sound from there, into Blackwater Sound, through another cut on the Intracoastal, into Tarpon Basin, Buttonwood Sound and finally back into Fl. Bay to our home port.

We actually had to hack our way into this small creek that joins two bodies of water, we left Fl. Bay and entered Long Sound. Notice the Mangrove debris on the deck that is from the mast hitting the trees as we went through the creek.

Fun in the Back Country

My friend David and I went into the Back Country yesterday for a little fishing , we caught a variety of fish, including Jack Crevalles, Spotted Sea Trout, Lady Fish and a couple of Sharks. Because the season for Trout is closed until January we did not bring home dinner. The Jack's and the other fish gave us fun sport and all were released unharmed.

Picture below is David with a 2 1/2 Lb Jack. No David is not Hamas, the face cloth is made from special cloth to protect you against the sun's rays.

More Outward Bound encounters

As explained in the next post, I take every opportunity that I am afforded, to encounter these small Outward Bound craft and their sailors. Typical groups that one might expect to encounter are disabled veterans, cancer survivors, troubled youth and on and on. They all come out here for one reason, to look inside their souls and sort things out, the experience with others that are in "the same boat" coupled with the beauty of the Fl. bay is a powerful force.

Outward Bound...A look back through todays sailors.

Back in the late sixties, I had the wonderful opportunity to participate in an Outward Bound program. The course was a sailing course that took place on Blue hill Bay and surrounding areas of Maine waters. The vessels were 30' double ended pulling boats, with a co-ed crew of twelve people, powered by either wind or rowing. These stout little vessels had no head, no cleaning facilities or bunks on which a person might catch a good nights sleep. The course lasted thirty days, no base camp, just small islands which became our homes for the night.

I learned a great deal about working with others, team work, group dynamics, and yes, when to keep my mouth shut. It is because of the lasting impact that this course had on me and my teaching, every chance I get to talk with other students, especially during their course, I jump at the opportunity. There is an Outward Bound school here in the Keys, they go out in similar craft as I did and in a new and improved version. Every time I see them out on the Bay I either sail or motor out to greet them, take their pictures and post them on my Flickr site so their families can share a little of what it was like.

Nest Key Revisited...First This Season

North Nest Key is one of two keys located in the Florida Bay, about seven miles North of where I live in the Keys. It is in the heart of the Florida Everglades National Park and one of only a few Keys that you can actually land on. You can camp there but you must have a permit and as on all the Keys in the Everglades, you cannot have pets on land. Nest key is a favorite stop for avid Kayaker's as the trip out and back is moderately challenging, especially if the wid kicks up.

Yesterday, after communicating with two other Catboat owners, we all agreed to meet at Nest Key for lunch. I was the first to arrive, as I left early, then came Roland on Ibis, after a short time JC and Rose on Green Eyes arrived. It was a great sail out and back. The wind was perfect, 10 - 15 ESE, so one long tack out and two tacks back.

I am posting 4 pictures taken from my cellphone, the reason being that my regular camera battery was dead. I will post other pictures as they arrive.

I just finished several hours cleaning up after the workers left, grading the yard, raking the coral and wetting down the ground so that the dirt that was mixed with the coral is now under the pea rock. It does not look too bad but I think that a few yards of new coral pea rock is called for.

Jeff (?), you will be happy to know that I did not have to wait until next year after all.

Cleaning up the Keys...the price that one must pay

In an attempt to clean up, preserve and improve the water quality of the Keys, a sewer project that extends from Key Largo to Key West was started last year. While I had to deal with our streets torn up, for three months, this year we have to deal with the hassle of sewer connections from the house to the street.

Now, when it comes to maintaining my property, I am a bit of a fanatic. Each day I rake the coral as if I were maintaining a Zen Garden, you can only imagine how stressed I am watching the process of connecting the sewers unfold.

Here are some pictures of a once nicely manicured coral yard. The workers say that it will be put back to it's original condition, we'll see about that. More photos to follow, after the job is finished.

Each year I try to find out a little more about this body of water. Exploring the Florida Bay is exciting, educational and most of all relaxing.

As I sit on my dock, I can't help thinking what I will find next

You only have to sail these waters once to become enamored with the potential of almost endless experiences.

What draws me to the Keys...gin clear water, the Reefs, sailing waters and Palm trees that whisper in the wind at night.

I had always thought that I would retire in North Carolina, one year I found out that it was too cold there in the winter, my next stop, St. Augustine Fl., too cold there as well. I discovered what the Keys had to offer by accident. I was on a motorcycle trip one year in Nov. and kept riding South until I was warm, when I finally turned off the bike, I was in the Keys, "no brainer", I said to myself and seven years later I still enjoy what the Keys has to offer.

This week has been a settling in time, unpacking, getting the boats ready for launching Etc., all is complete and it is time to sail and fish.

My friend Scottie and I just returned from a week long tour of The Skyline Drive, Blue Ridge Parkway and The Smoky Mountains. The weather was great every day, no rain at all but the mountain temperatures were a little cool each morning.

We started out from Jackson, NJ then made our way West to Gettysburg, Pa. where we picked up 15 South to Front Royal,Va. the start of the Skyline Drive. The Skyline Drive is 105.4 miles long and ends in Rockfish Gap, Va. At Rockfish Gap we picked up the Blue Ridge Parkway, which is 469.1 miles ending in Cherokee, NC. The ride through the mountains offered us a great opportunity to see some of the most beautiful scenery in America.

We spent one of the evenings in Maggie Valley, a great spot to relax, have a good meal and charge your batteries for the next few days of travel. From Maggie Valley we headed South to the infamous Tail of The Dragon. The Dragon's Tail is a length of mountainous highway (129) that is eleven miles long which twists and turns 318 times, featuring switch backs and wild turns to please even the most seasoned rider.

After riding The Tail of the Dragon we started our trip back to NJ, heading to the Eastern Shore where we crossed the Bay Bridge Tunnel, up Hwy Thirteen and across the Cape May Lewes Ferry before getting on to the Garden State Pkwy for a short drive home.

We made it, had a great time, great weather and saw some very interesting sites to boot. The Bikes performed extremely well, no near misses and in my case will be tucked away for the winter while I am in Fl.

Only a couple of pics as we were on Bikes and did not feel like stopping every few minutes to capture a scene, after all that is why we are endowed with a Memory.

We left the US on Saturday, September 17 and returned a week later on September 24. After landing at Heathrow Airport, we boarded an Air Lingus flight to Shannon, Ireland.We then were transported to our first hotel in Galway City, in the South West of Ireland. There we strolled through the town, went into several Pubs and did some shopping. All in all we spent two days in Galway, taking side trips to the country side through an area called Connemara.

These are just a few of the two hundred and fifty five pictures that we took, to see them all go to the Flickr Site at the top of the page.

Our next stop was Blarney, but not until we toured along the coast then stopping at a beautiful town called Kilarney. While at Kilarney, we took a horse and carriage ride through a 14,000 acre park, the views were spectacular and the weather was cooperating. This was also the day we stopped to see the beautiful and scenic Cliffs of Moher..

Next stop, Blarney, where the famous Blarney Castle is located, home to the ever popular Blarney Stone. Kissing the Blarney Stone is supposed to endow you with the "Gift of Gab"; personally lying on one's back, bending over backwards and kissing a dirty stone that has more germs than a Grand Central Station bathroom, was not very appealing. "Did I do it", you ask, most certainly, it turned out to be funny and I could always use more ability to BS. We stayed in Blarney that night but not until we gorged ourselves on a great Irish dinner of Lamb, potatoes, veggies and Guinness.

Our next stop was Cork City in the County of Cork, there we went to the ever popular English Market, a great spot for fresh produce, meats and Seafood. It was in the English Market that we had our first traditional Shepard's Pie, mmmm good.

Dublin was our last destination, we stayed there three days, taking in all the sights, St. Patrick's Cathedral, Trinity College, the Famous Gardens and we even managed to go to an Irish Cabaret one evening. The twenty second of Sept. was Arthur Guiness' birthday and as an ingenious marketing strategy, all the Pubs served only Guinness. That day Fran and I had lunch at the Brazen Head Pub, the oldest Pub in Ireland, had to have a Pint I might add.

They have very big spiders on the Barnegat, this happens to be the area from which I sail. I'm glad that one of the Arachnids chose Kent's boat and not mine. Here you can see that his sailboat has been entrapped by the spiders huge web, no one has seen or heard from Kent since, although we have heard some strange noises coming from below decks. During my sail yesterday , I could not help but notice that the Birds have returned and all seems well, at least for the birds that dwell above the high tide line.

Osprey's and Sea Gulls are well adapted to adversity and these photos show just that.
Incidentally, the proximity that I was able to achieve to these birds, is a direct effect of a center board craft, such as the Marshall Sanderling with her 18" draft. The water here is 2' deep!

Post Irene, Good For Some, Terrible For Others.

As Hurricanes go, Irene was not too bad, for some that is, for others it was a complete nightmare.

For example, at the Boat Yard where I have a boat and many friends that have boats, we were all apprehensive about the potential for damage beyond immediate and inexpensive repair. Our worries, after a night of South Easterlies, before the wind veered to the N then to the West, were for our little craft tied helplessly to wooden piles driven into thick mud. We had no idea whether our stout dock lines would measure up to such a storm. We expected NE winds as the Storm came up the Coast, it faked us out, we were pelted with rain and very stiff winds from the SE. SE, isn't that what causes flooding here at our Marina? You Betchum! That is exactly what happened, electricity went out early so people that were prepared with pumps were rendered impotent, they flooded and had to resort to generaters or any means of getting the water to abate.

My one friend in Lawrenceville, Baydog, thought that clean gutters would solve the problem, as you can see by his Blog he had far more to worry about. I assume that after fixing the problem and a few Gibson's later he is in a good place. http://829southdrive.blogspot.com/

The 2011 Duck Boat Worlds is now history, a good time was had by all, the wind finally coperated and Quack Mire is in hibernation for another year.

The weather forcasters are predicting doom and gloom from Irene(hope not) and LeeMarie has been prepared to battle the elements as best as could be without taking her out of the water. She faces North and if the Storm comes by way of NE, she should be able to deal with the onslaught. Winds on Sunday are predicted to turn NW then W, each of these senarios is more positive than if the winds were to turn South.

In the meantime, waiting for the storm, Lee Marie is enjoying some very calm water!

With the threat of Hurricane Irene looming over the Bay, the Duck Boat Worlds sailed on in an abbreviated form. Morning races only, however, I am very pleased to report that the entry prepared by Marie Darling and I finished the truncated event in 3rd, 5th, and 17th place respectively. Our Skipper Tyler represented himself, Marie and I and the Friends Of Belmar Harbor with distinction. Our hats are off to Tyler! Way to go Tyler, bragging rights are yours, you kicked butt.

We also, because of our efforts to prepare and maintain this boat is good sailing condition, earned a 1000.00 charitable donation for the Friends Of Belmar Bay. This donation is generously provided by The Duck Boat Foundation, sponsored by Peter Kellogg.

DUCK BOAT Quack Mire!...is finished and prepared for Friday's race.

After several weeks of scraping, sanding, filling and painting, Quack Mire is finally in the water to swell any planks that might have let water seep into the bilge. She was very dry after three hours and we don't expect her to get any worse, just better.

We have enlisted a young Sailor by the name of Tyler who will sail her to victory or, at least, to the finish line. Tomorrow night is the pre race judging and party to kick off the Duck Boat Worlds, then Friday, weather permitting is the Duck Boat Worlds, a cheerful and fun time on the water including some very competitive sailing tactics.

Marie Darling and I put in many long hours getting this boat ready to help The Friends Of Belmar Harbor. a club that offers many sailing activities for youngsters. We are hoping that Quack Mire qualifies for a charitable contribution from the Duck Boat foundation, any contribution would be turned over to Friends Of Belmar Bay.

My Heart Is Touched By This Event and Follow up Story!

While visiting Japan for the first time in 1986, I found a wonderful society that was proud, intellectual, neat, generous and above all honest. I can attest to the last statement out of personal experience...I had just landed in Japan after a long flight from NJ and needless to say I was tired from the flight that had taken many hours to complete, not to mention the Sake that some US Sailors and I consumed along the way. After deplaning, I met my host who was putting me up for a few weeks before I started my back packing trip, in my haste to get some rest I inadvertently left one of my bags in the airport lobby, that one contained my money, travelers checks Etc. About thirty minutes driving from the airport I realized that I had forgotten my bag, we turned around and went back to the airport, not expecting to find my bag. My friend said" don't worry, it will be there". Lo and behold, after what seemed like an eternity, I arrived back where I thought I had left my bag, there it was, untouched and everything intact! I was pleasantly surprised and actually witnessed many other acts of kindness and honest behaviour during my three months there.

A few years later, as a teacher in Jackson Township, several other teachers and I were invited by the Japanese Government to take part in an exchange athletic program. After agreeing, we packed our bags along with thirty six high school students and flew to Japan for what turned out to be a wonderful and rewarding trip. We were there for Christmas and to help usher in the New Year. No incidents or drama, just a great time. We were put up in the Keio Plaza Hotel during our stay and if you remember, that is where George Bush, the elder stayed during one of his visits.

Coming next week is the Duck Boat Worlds, Marie darling and I are hurrying to get an entry ready, for The Friends of Belmar harbor. We worked on this boat last year but we only had the boat for a week, this year we have done more extensive work on her and expect that she will be on the starting line for the judging and the race. This is our entry from last year, better this year.

A Dog Day Afternoon...Just Call Me Baydog! Hajime Mashite!

I have been writing this Blog for about a year and a half now and there was, from the very start one individual who always took the time to comment on my Posts. That person goes by the Blogosphere name of Baydog. Today after sharing comments on each others Blogs, I finally met the Baydog, I must say, that he was what I expected. I think that we hit it off from the very first "Hello" and that we will continue to be friends on the Internet and Beyond.

D..y was easy to talk to and I could tell that he shares the same passion that I do for the water and serene places. He found a new one today! My little piece of Paradise quickly became one of Baydog's.

After snapping several pictures we both bid each other Adieu (until we meet again), perhaps one day he will visit Florida Bay, maybe we will sail for an afternoon or just keep in touch via Blogs. Whatever, it's all good.

Getting Our Entry Ready For The Worlds...Duck Boat That Is!

Marie Darling and I have been working several days now to get our entry ready for the Duck Boat Worlds, actually it is not our Duck Boat, it belongs to "Friends of Belmar Bay". Marie and I are just some volunteers that they dug up to whip this craft into sail able condition. This is our second year helping out and we both have enjoyed the process. What you see in the pictures is the wooding of the bottom and preparing the deck for paint. We both expect that this boat will be competitive and expect to have fun in the process.

Beaton's has begun to bring the Little Quackers out of storage for their short lived chance to get wet and strut their stuff. I see Russ Manheimer working on Speedwell, Marie Darling and I are getting our entry ready and Paul Smith is busy in the shop working on yet another.

It seems a very short time ago I returned form the Winter in the Keys, actually it has been four months to the day. Although I usually enjoy the New Jersey Shore and it's fine summer weather, this year has been quite different because of the high temperatures and lack of rain fall as of late. The same was not true in May however, when it seemed like it rained every day, or at least every other day. None the less, life is good and in two months I make my way back to the Keys, God willing.

Time Marches On, Somewhere!!! Reluctantly

As usual, on any given summer day I was hanging out at the boatyard, working on a project, shooting the bull and observing how little things have changed yet how some things have changed.

The first set of pictures are of a 1903 Ships Wheel, in for an estimate to determine how much it would cost to restore it to new condition. I will not divulge the estimate, rest assured that it would be considerable. It was made in Philadelphia in 1903 by Williams Mfg. Co., I assume that it saw service on some Coasting Schooner, transporting goods up and down the East Coast until it either sank or was taken out of service. The Wheel is about 5' in diameter and is inlaid with holly and sports a solid bronze hub. Unfortunately, for the present owner it did not react well to being left outside exposed to the elements. Never the less It is a great conversation piece, I sure hope it can be saved. Update... 8/3/11 Just as I thought, after hearing what it would cost to restore the wheel, the owner picked it up from the shop and took it home.

The second set of pictures are of the very old, in need of repair, plank steaming box. The steam is provided to this dilapidated box by an antique steam boiler. Don't get me wrong, I love this stuff, this is what keeps me going back to Beaton's year after year. Initially, the box leaks until it swells then the wood is steamed until the fibers become pliable and are bent on a jig. Remember if it ain't broke, don't fool with it.

Finally, modern technology comes to Beaton's, in the form of a wind vane of the highest calibre. Bureaucracy is still rampant in Brick Township, just in case you are wondering; it took great patience and much Red Tape to get this new "Green" machine approved.

MIKE GLADYSZ, Not Forgotten, Missed Deeply

It was one year ago that Mike was taken from us, a year that has evoked sadness, great memories, and a commitment to never forget him. Everyone I talk to, that knew Mike, his family, friends, former students and co-workers think about Mike often; always in a positive way. For me and my girlfriend, Fran Baker, who by the way, was Mike's Mother In Law, every day without Mike reminds us how important he was in our lives.

Mike, was the kind of person that we came to depend on for many small but important aspects of our lives. He was always available to help us around the house, take care of our animals, when we were away, put up Christmas ornaments, entertain guests with games when we had BBQ's and on and on. He enjoyed many of the same activities that I enjoy and that gave us a lot to talk about, especially when he visited me in the Keys. He loved the water, enjoyed all of our sails and was excited when we went fishing. There was never a dull moment when Mike was present his enthusiasm was contagious.

Although Mike was important to us, his family has felt the greatest loss. Mike was a dedicated Son to his Father and Mother, a good friend and helper to his Siblings. He would always be available to lend his Dad a hand when needed, they were truly connected as a Father and Son. Mike was also a dedicated Father to his three children, I know, I observed his commitment and love for them on a daily basis. His support of their interests, activities and goals was unwavering, he was always there for them, and they knew it. I see and feel their loss each time I am around them, however, their good memories of him also shine through their sadness, and they have many good memories to bolster them as they continue to grow.

Mike was a teacher and as such had an opportunity to influence hundreds of students, which he did in a positive manner. The outpouring of emotions from his former students as well as his students during the time that he passed, is a testament to his empathy, understanding and love that he put into his work. Additionally, Mike was loved and respected by his co-workers, who, always knew that they could count on Mike for help, a person to talk to and a true friend when needed.

Mike, we all miss you, every one whose life you touched will never forget you, you will remain in our hearts forever.

Entire Town For Sale!...Been There Many Times On My Sturgis Pilgramage!

Scenic, South Dakota is for sale, yes the entire town...news story included. But first a little history of the town and the owner, then some personal pictures.

Twila Merrill, the owner of this tiny town has owned it for many years and during that time she became quite famous for her Rodeo skills, she was crowned a Champion many times in her storied career. She is still a tough old gal who, now is fighting the battle of her life. She has cancer that has racked her body and threatens to put her to rest.

I first met Twila more than ten years ago on one of my motorcycle trips to Sturgis, SD for the famous Sturgis Bike Rally. Since that time, every time I make the trip out there I stop by and see Twila, last August was the last time I spoke with her. At that time I knew that she was ill and, truthfully, did not expect to see her still working at one of her stores, let alone seeing her alive. But there she was, working and greeting her customers as usual.

She has been shot, raised many children that were not her own, gave them shelter and love when no one else cared for them. One of her more famous Foster children is Goldberg, the quite popular and flamboyant Pro Wrestler. She never hesitates to tell stories about him and exudes pride when his name is mentioned.

I have included some pictures and a link to the story of Scenic and the proposed sale of the town, nothing, however, can completely convey the history that is this town. When Twila passes a true Pioneer will be lost.

Actually, this is not a joke but an incident that caused a friend to lose the rudder off his pride and joy, sailboat Sjogin and the effort to try and find it. So, I went out for a short sail today, thinking that I would try to locate the lost Rudder. While sailing the other day, my friend Russ had his rudder unship and sink to the bottom of the Barnegat Bay. It is from his little sloop, Sjogin and will not be an easy thing to replace. I looked in the area where he said that it disappeared, as well as along the marsh in the hope that it might have somehow drifted toward shore. No luck! I did, however, enjoy all the Osprey's in their nests looking after their young. Virtually every man made nesting area was occupied and were a bevy of activity.

Sunday Ride Is Always Amusing

This week we rode through the Pine Barrens of NJ, stopping at a few places to enjoy people watching, a cold drink and a break from the heat.

The Green Bank Tavern is always interesting, you never know what you are going to see in this place. To call it a dive is being kind, it does, however, serve a fairly decent Bloody Mary, my choice was club soda. Scottie (pictured) chose the BM, he always does. This place is in the heart of the Pine Barrens and has nothing but local ambiance dripping from it, the trick is avoiding the droplets.

Our final destination, after a fine lunch at the Watering Hole in May's Landing, is the Happy Apple Inn, Imlaystown . We always end up at this location, it is fairly close to home, they serve a good cocktail, food and it is always frequented by an interesting group of Senior Citizens. I stumbled on this IPA today trying to deal with the heat, between water and food, this is what came up.

One of two of the launching Pits at Beatons. This in the one usually reserved for the smaller craft like Sanderlings, Sandpipers Etc. Archaic but effective. Green before it's time, works on electricity, always has. Back in the day it was either this or a dilapidated old crane, name Hardly Able that did all the launching's. The crane was located at the West end of the creek, no not creak, but that was known to happen on occasion while lifting boats almost beyond the capacity of the crane. By the way my father dug the creek at Beaton's, The Lagoon's at Curtis Point and Shore Acres.

Before the new Travel Lift was installed it was either this lift or Hardly Able.
You had to have been around Beaton's a long time to remember Hardly Able.
Perhaps, I can dig up some pictures of Hardly Able to show you what I mean.

These boats just don't seem to be catching on, perhaps of the speed restrictions, maybe aesthetics, who knows. If I had the extra money I'd buy one just for putting around at cocktail hour, I could see my self in the Keys or Bay Head enjoying Joe Leone's appetizers and fine wine while cruising among the more fortunate watery neighborhoods.

Lee Marie Dresses For Her Northern Visit

Yesterday, after polishing the hull, doing the bright work and launching her, Lee Marie was ready for her rigging and having the sail bent on. She looked a little sad at first but after her running rigging got squared away and her sail bent, we went for a sail and upon returning to the dock she was beaming.

Uggghhh! Beautiful all week, BBQ tomorrow and some rain is predicted! A few weather stations Pooh Pooh the rain, some say possible TS' in the afternoon, what the @#%$? Let's take a look...shall we?

Nifty Little Craft For Sale... Custom Built!

My friend Rick, from Spring Lake has always been handy with tools and a couple of years ago set about to build himself a small day sailer. After several months, this is the fruit of his labor, a nice easily handled day sailer in immaculate condition. He only sailed it for 30 hours and now he wants to try something different.

My First Herreshoff!

Herreshoff Hull Plaque

This is "CYGNET" a Seafarer Class Sloop designed by A Sidney DeW. Herreshof and built by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Co. in 1938. Sidney was the son of Nathanael Greene and the brother of L. Francis Herreshoff. Cygnet was one of two built and was my first acquisition of a Herreshoff designed and built boat, her hull # was 1474. In those days each boat that came out of Bristol bore a hull # plate that was affixed the the vessel, sort of like a Vin #.

She was sailed out of the Beaton Yard for many years before I sold her to a chap that allowed her to fall into disrepair, she was finally destroyed. This Plaque is all that remains of her. Incidentally 1938 was the year of the terrible storm that destroyed much of the Herreshoff Manufacturing facility.

For those of you that are Herroshoff followers, here is their Family Tree, you can see that two of Nathanael's sons were Sidney and L(ewis). Francis.

Today I received an E-mail from my buddy Roland, who was fortunate enough to solo sail the Arey's Pond Catboat, on the Charles River. A previous post gave information about MIT's sailing program and the Lynx class Catboat.

Roland reports that the boat handled extremely well and navigated the harbor in grand style, among all manner of large and small craft that took advantage of the fine weather. I have included several pictures from Roland's sail.

Most guys that I know have a routine of playing golf, watching football, or boating on Sunday, unlike them, I enjoy getting on my Harley and take to the back roads of NJ or Pa for a relaxing ride. Every Sunday, weather permitting, a friend of mine and/or my girfriend and I crank up our Land Barges and head for some pre - determined destination; we don't go to the beach, down the Parkway, on the Tnpk. or any other road that supplies the weekend crowd with a means for travel and a place to gather in large groups.

I have been riding a motorcycle since 1961, starting out with a 1953 Lambretta Scooter, then a Honda, to a Kawasaki, then on to my favorites, a series of Harley's. Currently, my favorite Bike is a Harley Davidson 2004 Electra Glide Classic. With 85,000 on the odometer, it is clearly the winner when it comes to long distance riding.

As my Blog title suggests, I spend a great deal of time in the Florida Keys boating, fishing and sailing every chance I get, however, as the title also suggests there is a beyond. The Biking aspect of my life is included in that beyond. Motorcycles provide a different type of interaction with others, an element of speed and of course, a little risk.

So, my Blogger reading friends, don't be too put off because you can't always find me on some boat on some waterway enjoying the liquid experience, rather ask yourself, "I wonder what today brings for the Harley riding sailor".
