While The Wind Is Down, No Sailing, Fishing Takes The Spotlight

Yesterday was forecast to be warm, no wind, clear water, perfect for going out into the Back Country  to catch some fish and relax. The day proved to be exactly as predicted, the weather cooperated as well as the fish.

While looking around some new spots, I came upon an area that looked interesting and that might be perfect for producing the desired result, catching fish. Actually, I stumbled onto an old wreck that was clearly there for years, so I positioned my boat so as to drift down on it,  all the while casting a plug in close proximity. One cast and bingo I had what felt like a nice fish, my first thought was that it was a Grouper, as it tried to make it's way back underneath the wreck. Well, my guess was right, a Grouper who was determined to get back into it's hole. As I drifted down on the wreck I thought I was going to loose not only the fish but my lure as well. Once over the wreck, I put the boat in reverse,  tightened the drag a bit and managed to pull him free. Because I was fishing with a Med. to Light rod,  with 15# test line, the fight was still far from over, eventually, however, I boated the fish took a picture and released it unharmed. Grouper season is closed at this time and I wanted to make sure that the fish survived the ordeal, all was good.

Grouper caught on a diving lure

I spent most of the day trying new lures, different locations and just plain enjoying the day on the water. I was able to catch Spanish Mackerel, Speckled Sea Trout, Blue Fish and Jacks. I kept the Mackerel, one Trout and Blue Fish went to the smoker. It was another great day on the Florida Bay

One of eight Trout I caught, all but one released

I only use artificial bait, never fresh

I especially like the strike on top water lures

Another Trout, 17"

From top to bottom, Two Mackerel, Sea Tout and two Blue Fish. Including the Grouper, some Jacks it was a nice day on the Water

  2. "Give a man a fish and he won't starve for a day. Teach a man how to fish and he won't starve for his entire life".
Regrettably the origin of this quote is unknown, although it is generally cited as being a Chinese Proverb. Mistakenly it has been attributed to Confucius, Lao Tzu and Guan Zhong.
